More on the Rich Jerk
A respected female marketer held a web poll of her readers this last week and asked the question: "Should the Rick Jerk and people promoting this event be held accountable for their actions?"
89.9% of respondents voted yes.
I had lunch today with some serious business professionals - they may not 'well known' but these guys could buy and sell the average 'I make 90% of my money by holding Internet seminars teaching people how to make money on the Internet' 'Experts' (and I use the word experts very lightly) ten times over.
The subject turned to the Rich Jerk and those promoting him. I asked these gentlemen what they thought and the response was threefold:
1. Grossly offensive.
2. It is monumentaly stupid to alienate so many people (Male and female).
3. "We have lost all respect for those promoting this event!"
Read point # 3 again.
Please understand these are not fly-by-night 'lightweight' guru wannabe's these were successful professionals.
Anyway, on the way home I received a call from a well-known marketer who wanted to let me know that my stand would 'certainly not do your seminar speaking invitations any favors'
I replied that my integrity was not,is not and never will be for sale and that you could offer me ten million dollars and I would not take it to write even 3 lines of copy in support of the Rich Jerk and his profane, sexist, juvenile, verbal and written garbage.
We agreed to 'agree to disagree' but as I drove home I thought what if he is correct and taking the stand I have on this issue does lose me money…?
But then I reflected on what a beautiful thing it is to know in your heart of hearts that when it comes to 'going along with the crowd just to blend in' you are 'Not for Sale'
Not at ANY price.
I thought about my three beautiful daughters, Rebecca, Holly-Rachel and Katie Grace and how blessed I was to have them. About my two sons, Samuel and Josiah and how much I love them.
About how I could not imagine in my wildest dreams boasting to my kids that I had attended a party at the Playboy Mansion (As one very well known marketer said he would do this last week)
I was also glad that I know several genuine marketing experts whose focus is not merely to 'squeeze-every-last-dollar-out of-their-list' but to deliver genuine value for money and leave the world a better place along the way.
I'm not for sale.
I'm not a testimonial for hire.
I don't sell hope to the hopeless.
And…if it meant that I never got invited to speak at another event again as long as I live it would be a very small price to pay to 'know that I know that I know' that money isn't everything, not rocking the boat isn't everything - even the acceptance of your peers isn't everything - character is.

Hi Chris, I came across your site today after you left a comment on one of my companies websites: VipGlamout.net - reference RJ / Rich Jerk. Just wanted to say, I really respect what you have to say and you say it very well. Keep up the good work. Barry

Chris
Good on ya!
Yeah, I totally agree with you.
Glad to see you are making a stand on this and that you're not just going with the "crowd". It takes a man to be able to do that, and I really hope that others will be able to follow your great example.
Really good point about your three daughters and two boys. What kind of an awful example it would create if you were to go along to these kinds of events. We need some more good role models like you in this world.
Thanks once again. I feel proud and honored to know you.
