When was the last time you received exceptional value for money?

I don't mean when was the last time the lady at McDonalds gave you 'an extra Sundae on the house' - I mean when was the last time you bought something that literally blew you away and far exceeded your expectations?

In my own case, I think it would have to be the Ascot Budget Inn near Brisbane International Airport.

I recently returned from a trip overseas and stayed there overnight before driving home. I was tired as a dog and just wanted a place to crash.

I read their ad on a noticeboard  at the airport, hailed a cab and ten minutes later was led to my room.

Now - bear in mind this is a budget hotel. I just wanted a place to sleep so the idea of paying $500 a night to close my eyes did not make much sense.

Even in my severely jet-lagged state I knew things were different.

The manager informed me that my fee of $80.00 for the night included an evening meal and breakfast. The room was not the Ritz but was clean and the bed was exceptionally comfy. The meals were tasty and the staff went out of their way to make me feel like I was a very welcome guest.

In my business travels I have stayed at some of the worlds best hotels. My all time favorite is the Ascot in Beijing, China.

But this little budget inn a short drive from Brisbane International Airport really made me stop and think: "It's been a long time since I encountered such great service and value for money"
