How do you re-negotiate salary offer? Please help.?

Hi. I’ve got an offer for a new job which consists of business development, project management, sales, marketing and lots of traveling opportunities.

It’s a start-up company, branching out from its Europe office. At first, they called and offered me only 8% higher than what I’m getting now. I was not pleased.

So, I called them back and they gave me 30% higher. I promised to get back to them.

My target is to get 50% higher but I’m not sure whether if I call back to ask them to meet halfway, they’ll reject me. :( … I’m in confused mode. Please help. I really love this job and would like to be part of this challenging team but I don’t want to be under-paid for the sacrifices I’ll be making in terms of time and lifestyle.

Any advice is welcome especially for people who are very experienced in salary negotiations. Thank you in advance.

Take the 30%.

Last thing you want is to start in a new job with people thinking you’re only interested in money and not the company.

What if they say no to 50%? What do you do then? Turn the job down? Or just look a bit daft having to back down and take 30?

And it’s not just management who might think that. Secretarial staff know EVERYTHING that goes on, and if you’re unpopular with the secretaries you could have a very hard time. They can bad-mouth you to all and sundry and affect your reputation in the company (especially with people earning less than you!).

If you want the job, take what’s on offer, then do the job so well that this time next year they will give you a big pay rise in order to keep you happy.

Money is important, but in order to be successful in the long term you need to build good relationships within the company.

If you give in a litttle now, you may end up far better off in the long term.

Good luck.
