account manager?

Im applying for a position as an accounts manager with a local business… it sounds really great, and they are willing to train in sales…my question is…what is a more specific job description so i can better apply?

Accounts managers are sales and customer care in one, with the emphasis on sales. In business, customers order from the accounts manager at the company who is familiar with what they bought last time, will come out for a consultation, is the person they call if the order is wrong, who advocates to the production staff that they can’t b.s. their way through your order, and the person who advises the customer on different options or configurations or whatever. It’s *sales*, but not in the same way that buying a car would be, because while a sales person deals primarily with one-off sales, an accounts manager is all about maintaining an ongoing relationship with the customers.

The accounts manager is basically the contact point between the world and the company. Most of the time, they’re the only person in the company a customer ever talks to. Think of accounts management as being something of an Avon lady for your clients. They need something, they call you, and you take care of it from there.

To illustrate your potential strength as an accounts manager without having been one, focus on the care and concern that’s informed your client relationships in the past, however brief, which would show that you have the instinct for it.
